Switching energy suppliers can save you money

Householdes finding themselves in the red at the end of the month despite careful financial planning could benefit from taking a closer look at their utility bills.

This is the suggestion of Consumer Focus, which recommends switching energy firms in order to benefit from big savings.

The statutory consumer group for England, Wales and Scotland warned that rising energy prices will be taking their tolls on many consumers, particularly older people, families and people with low incomes.

"Many customers will be looking to save money wherever they can to help counter rising costs," said Hannah Mummery, energy expert at Consumer Focus.

"Although people may feel there is little to choose between the major energy firms, switching can provide savings, especially if you have never changed supplier or switch from paying by cash, cheque or pre-pay meter to direct debit."

She was speaking after the big six gas and electricity providers – including British Gas, E.ON and nPower – all announced price hikes ahead of the winter season when most people's bills will escalate as a result of switching the central heating back on.
