Students advised to get insurance

With the next generation of uni students gearing up for fresher's week in September, a leading insurer has advised them to make sure they are adequately covered.

Aviva says that while students are a high-risk group - with a third estimated to become victims of crime - many take high-value items to university with them, amounting to an average value of £2,100.

This causes concern for parents, with 37 per cent worried about muggings, 38 per cent afraid their child will lose their valuables and 22 per cent anxious about burglary.

However, Jonathan Cracknell, underwriting manager at Aviva, said that in many cases parents can cover their child's possessions under their own home insurance policies.

"It may come as a surprise to parents to discover that some costs like insuring their children's belongings … could be cheaper than they thought, or in fact not cost them anything extra at all," he commented.
