Savings hit 12-month low

The level of saving in the UK has hit a 12-month low, with 23 per cent of Britons now not putting away anything each month.

NS&I's latest Quarterly Savings Survey found that Britons are saving an average of just £87 each month, down from £100 last spring.

A quarter of those questioned said they are less likely to save over the next three months and over a third do not have enough money put aside to cope in the event of an emergency.

Saving levels have declined most among those in their late thirties and early forties, with 28 per cent unable to make any deposits.

John Prout, retail customer director at NS&I, advised people to look carefully at their financial planning: "It is worth everyone taking another look at their finances to make sure their money goes as far as possible.

"Why not start a log of all incomings and outgoings to help you work out a budget?"
