Saving outlook improves

Britons are increasingly looking to put money away for the future, new research shows.

In its latest Saving Index, Nationwide reveals that the country's overall optimism towards putting money away rose two points over the course of last month to stand at 82, as all three sub-indices posted increases.

Of such rises, the largest was the Importance of Saving index which saw growth of 13 points to 98, the biggest monthly rise ever recorded in the history of the study.

The research also reveals that 59 per cent of people think it is personally important for them to save, while 18 per cent of respondents believe they will be putting more money away in six months' time.

Andy Hutchinson, head of saving for Nationwide, claims the improving outlook towards saving is "an encouraging development", with the ongoing economic downturn deemed to have been generating a shift in consumer mindset.

Meanwhile, Szu Ping Chan reported in a recent lovemoney.com article that regular saver accounts are an effective means of putting money away.
