Record rise in employed 'pensioners'

New figures show that there has been a record rise in the number of employed 'pensioners' - those aged over 65 who decide to keep earning.

Saga says that the latest Office for National Statistics figures indicate that employment rate among over-65s is at its highest ever, having risen by 102,000 since the last quarter - an increase of 11.6%.

Dr Ros Altmann, director-general of Saga, explained that continuing to work past 65 makes sense from a wealth management and lifestyle perspective.

"Retirement becomes a gradual process, rather than a sudden one-off event and they can have a better work-life balance, with more income to see them through their later years and more chance to save for old age," she said.

However, despite the obvious benefits of working later, some pensioners have had the choice to do retire taken away from them as they have seen their savings pots eroded by quantitative easing.
