Parents hit by over £1,000 worth of extra school costs

New research has revealed that parents are hit by £1,247 of extra school costs every year in addition to school fees.

Sheilas' Wheels home insurance found that by the time children reach secondary school this figure has reached £1,319 a year.

The top five costs are school meals (£242 per year), technologies and gadgets (£149), 'back to school' purchases (£143), travel (£140) and class trips (£137).

Other outgoings include £66 on music lessons and an average of £68 on after school sports.

Even during school holidays, the money keeps disappearing; with parents spending an average of £445 keeping their children entertained.

"Understandably every parent wants the very best for their children but … that often comes with a hefty price tag," commented Jacky Brown of Sheilas' Wheels home insurance.

"In these tough economic times it is no wonder that the costs associated with sending children to school are putting added pressure on family finances."
