NHIC: Energy efficiency 'will reduce cost of living long-term'

The National Home Improvement Council (NHIC) has suggested that people who are struggling to juggle their personal finances should consider going green to cut their fuel bills.

Andrew Leech, director at the NHIC, suggested that people need to consider the type of house they own before making energy efficiency changes as Victorian and Edwardian properties are more expensive to convert.

Mr Leech said: "[Increasing energy bills] is one of the key factors in getting people to improve their homes to energy efficient standards. It is a lot of money to invest, but it will help bring down their cost of living in the long run."

He suggested that the average cost of altering a home so that it complies with energy efficiency standards is £20,000.

A recent survey by Future Friendly, P&G's consumer education programme, revealed that 76 per cent of people in the UK have installed loft insulation.
