Married couples better protected than other family groups

New research has revealed that married couples are much better protected against unexpected life events than other types of family groups.

Sainsbury's Life Insurance found that while 37 per cent of married couples living with children have life cover, only 32 per cent of single parent families and 31 per cent of unmarried parents living with children have purchased this protection.

The same goes for those living in same-sex partnerships, of whom only less than quarter have life insurance.

Overall, 39 per cent of same-sex couples have life and/or critical illness cover, compared to 50 per cent of married pairs.

Commenting on the findings, Helen Williams, head of Sainsbury's Life Insurance, had the following financial advice.

"Having life insurance and critical illness cover gives you peace of mind that if you or your partner dies or cannot work due to illness, you could have one less thing to worry about at a difficult time," she said.
