Londoners have highest disposable incomes

A new study has revealed that people living in London had the highest disposable incomes in the UK in 2010.

The Office for National Statistics (ONS) 'Household disposable income across the UK' report shows that the average Londoner took home £20,238 after tax and benefits; with those in the inner London-west area topping the table with an average disposable income of £33,323.

London's average is some 51.8 per cent higher than the region with the lowest disposable income, the North East, where the figure stands at £13,329.

Also below the UK national average of £15,709 are Northern Ireland, Yorkshire and the Humber, Wales, the West Midlands, the North West, the East Midlands, Scotland and the South West as the recession slowed the amount of disposable income.

"Factors affecting this slow down … include unusually low interest rates for savings, a reduction in the numbers of people in employment, a fall in house prices, as well as minimal increases in wages and salaries for many in employment," the ONS said.
