Consumers 'can survive the credit crunch'

There are a number of ways to survive the credit crunch if consumers work towards living within their means, it is claimed.

Defaqto, a financial research analyst, warns the "good times" of the last decade have dried up, making it a difficult financial period in which to live.

The organisation urges consumers to spend at least one hour a week actively considering and managing their finances.

Furthermore, people should make savings wherever possible, even if they are just putting aside small amounts, it continues.

However, it calls on parents not to hit their children's pockets with their savings.

It recommends: "There are some areas where you should think hard about before making the decision. One of these is not cutting your children's pocket money. Don't get them worried unnecessarily!"

Last month, Halifax published its pocket money survey, noting the average pocket money this year is £6.13 a week, compared to more than £8 a week in 2007.
