Britons advised to get insurance for £32bn worth of luggage

New research has found that British holidaymakers pack an average of £1,440 in their suitcase and hand luggage when they go abroad.

MoneySupermarket.com also found that four per cent of travellers have had their bag stolen in the past, yet eight per cent have never had travel insurance.

However, even those who take out insurance often buy the wrong product for their needs. More than half were over-insured, while more worryingly, a third were under-insured.
In response to these findings, Bob Atkinson, travel expert at MoneySupermarket.com, had the following financial advice: "It's important to make sure you have the right level of cover in place for your holiday.

"If you're underinsured you could be left out of pocket if you have to make a claim for lost or stolen items."

He also recommended taking out insurance to cover against cancellation and medical expenses, as well as reading the small print to check what is included in the policy.
