Amending the default retirement age 'would help over-50s find work'

Amendments to the default retirement age in the UK will help people over the age of 50 to find work and remain in employment, it has been suggested.

The British government is being urged to make employment easier to access in older age as the country attempts to deal with the issues of an ageing workforce.

According to the Equality and Human Rights Commission, financial requirements are the most important reason for people to continue working.

Laith Khalaf, pensions analyst at Hargreaves Lansdown, said: "There is a consultation that the Department for Work and Pensions is performing that closes in the next couple of weeks. That is likely to lead to some kind of reform of the default retirement age."

He added that there is a case to suggest that prolonging working life will make it easier for people over the age of 50 to get back into employment if they lose their job.

Research by the Federation of Small Businesses revealed that 60 per cent of small businesses believe that the government should not set a default retirement age.
