A third of Britons unlikely to leave behind an inheritance

New research has revealed that 31 per cent of Britons expect to struggle to leave behind an inheritance when they die.

Nationwide also found that 44 per cent believe they will struggle to fund their retirement, while 20 per cent are not expecting to be able to leave a mortgage-free home to their offspring.

This is at odds with the findings of Barings, which revealed that 17 per cent of people are hoping their inheritance will act as a source of retirement income.

Furthermore, Nationwide found that despite future financial uncertainty more than half had not yet started preparing.

John Wilkinson, head of protection and investments at Nationwide Building Society, had the following pensions advice: "There will only be one disastrous outcome for people's finances if they don't start putting things in place now

"The reality with financial planning is not to expect to rely on an inheritance because it may be that your parents cannot afford to leave you one that you would like."
