81% targeting home ownership

New research has revealed that 81 per cent of UK adults are targeting home ownership within the next ten years.

The Council of Mortgage Lenders (CML) found that a good deal of these aspiring buyers are actively pursuing this dream, with 74 per cent hoping to have secured a mortgage in two years' time.

Although the desire to own a home has fallen back slightly, it still remains strong across all age groups even though only a third of those who hope to be home-owners in two years time believe it will happen.

Commenting on the findings, Bob Pannell, the CML's chief economist, said: "The results clearly show that the British love affair with home-ownership is far from over.

"But achieving the home-ownership dream has become more difficult for people, and is likely to remain so, especially for the young."

Getting on the property ladder became more difficult from March this year when the government ended the stamp duty holiday for first-time buyers.
